Anabel and I, five years ago, on the day we recorded your meditation.
As I sit here on the deck, Luna, my 70-lb dog is crammed in between a chair and a pillar, catching a spot of sunshine.
She’s getting much more than a dose of vitamin D.
Luna’s entire body relaxes in the sun. It heals her on so many levels. Reducing it to something we equate with a supplement seems rather silly to me. The life-giving energy of the sun is far more powerful than we realize.
The sun is 333,000 times the mass of the earth, and it’s the dominant gravitational force that locks all the planets into place in our solar system. Without it, we’d go hurling in all directions along with the rest of the planets—galactic mayhem! The sun stabilizes us.
The sun also feeds us, warms us and brightens our spirits. If we didn’t have the sun, our world would be chilly and grim.
I love the sun, but not just for a tan. For me, absorbing the rays feels like an exchange of information.
When I feel sad, dull or depleted, even a few minutes of sunshine can reset me. I respect the sun, the way I respect the great force of the ocean. I try my best not to overdo it (thanks to some wicked sunburns), and I try not to be greedy with it by complaining about clouds and rain.
Even when it’s a grey day, we’re busy indoors, or we’re sensitive to the sun, we can connect to the energy of its light.
In honor of the Summer Solstice—when the light shines long and proud—here are three quick ways to bring the light back into your day, including a special gift for you.
- Visualization: Focus your awareness on your solar plexus chakra, the area just above your navel. If it feels comfortable, you can bring your hand there. This area represents your determination, strength, willpower, and inner fire. Breathe deeply and imagine bright, yellow, lustrous light filling that area. This practice is especially helpful if you’re feeling fearful, anxious or a lack of confidence.
- Sounding: Stand or sit with an upright spine. Again, place your hand on your solar plexus. Inhale through your nose, and breath out with a strong, clear, audible “ha,” feeling the breath and sound expel with a comfortable force. Don’t hold back—unless you’re on an airplane—then you should hold back. Repeat several times, and notice if your mind feels clearer. This one is great if you need to focus and get something done, or charge up a project.
- Two-Minute Guided Meditation (Audio Link Below): Five years ago, my little friend Anabel and I recorded this meditation for a special friend of ours who was healing from a serious illness. We wanted to do something unique for her. I had all kinds of technical issues at the time, and she didn’t receive her gift until this year! Our friend (who has healed!) shared that somehow it was meant to come to her now. For me, this was a great lesson in trusting natural timing and not trying to force something to happen. Instructions: You’ll hear me speak first, followed by Anabel. Allow Anabel’s tender voice to soften your heart, connecting you with your inner child. This way you can go backwards in time and help your younger self too. If you have privacy, each time after Anabel speaks, say the mantra out loud yourself. This seals the mantra into your present day experience, and the three of us will be practicing together!
In the Northern hemisphere, Summer Solstice is the perfect time to celebrate everything the sun gives. It’s a time when we can all harness the energy of light.
Luna isn’t the only one who has a relationship with the sun. Our ancestors knew that without the sun, there would be no life.
Surrounding you with Light,
Tamika & Anabel
